How can you reduce your carbon footprint?
1. Turn off switches and appliances on standby. Rooms don't mind whether the light is on or not, so when you leave a room turn off the light behind you. Appliances on standby are still using electricity, so turn off the television and computer as well as the monitors.
2.Take alternative transport options. Instead of driving to school or work, ride a bike or walk for exercise as well as reducing fossil fuel emissions. Otherwise, take a bus or carpool if the trip is too far.
3. Recycling. Organize a recycling program in your house so plastics, glass, etc can be disposed of carefully and made into something else.
4. Fresh vs. Packaged Foods. Packaged foods are often over-processed, contain additives and need resources to create the packing itself. Fresh food on the other hand can generally be cooked quicker and is usually more nutritious.
5. Light Bulbs. Incandescent light bulbs use more electricity, more money and more energy compared to fluorescent light bulbs. Install a fluorescent bulb next time you need another bulb replaced.
6. Beat the morning rush. Power companies have to find other sources of energy just to meet the morning rush hour. So have a shower at night, don't use heat on your hair like the hairdryer or straightener,
7. Don't Water waste. Don't leave the tap running when you brush your teeth, have quicker showers or run a shallow bath. Use as much cold water as possible.
8. Weather dependent clothing. Depending on the weather, put on more or less clothes instead of turning up the air conditioning or heater.
9. Plant a tree. Buy a tree from your local gardener and plant it in your garden.
10. Buy energy efficient products. When looking to buy your next washing machine, check out the energy and water use rating. It can save so much energy!
